Detailed instructions for use

Zincor is a special zinc-rich composition for protection of ferrous metals against corrosion in different environments. It is used for cold galvanizing and provides two levels of protection: internal (cathodic) and surface (barrier).

The stronger and better the zinc layer, the longer it will last. The longevity of the corrosion protection coating largely depends on following the instructions for use. You can extend its service life many times over if you properly prepare the surface and apply the composition.
 

PAINT SUBSTRATE PREPARATION

Metal surfaces

When preparing a metal substrate for painting, it is first necessary to remove traces of dirt, grease stains, accumulations of moisture and dust from it. All of this prevents even painting and can later cause corrosion. Only the surface of the right degree of purity will provide high adhesion to the zinc-rich coating and as a consequence - the preservation of its protective properties for many years.

The stages of surface preparation for painting:

1. Cleaning

The metal should be thoroughly cleaned of dirt, loose rust, scale, oil stains and other contaminants. Drops of water should also be removed from the surface before the paint is applied.

Metal base must be free of sharp edges, burrs, chips (ribs are acceptable). If obvious defects such as dents, sinks, scrapes and cracks are detected, they must be removed.

Cleaning can be done in different ways: mechanically (with a brush, fresh water); chemically (solvents, alkalis); thermally (flame, annealing). The most effective method of cleaning is selected with the degree of contamination of the metal in mind.

If the surface is relatively clean (i.e. has no sticky dirt, old coatings and corrosion), you can manually clean it with a suitable detergent. The next step is to degrease the metal.

2. Degreasing

The surface must be free of oil and grease that could impair adhesion to the zinc paint. Degreasing is made by means of fresh water or solvents. Degreasing is carried out to the first degree of GOST 9.402. And special attention shall be paid to the areas of mounting connections and welds.

  • Degreasing by water. The procedure is performed by directing a jet of water onto the metal surface. The pressure shall not exceed 70 MPa. But this value depends on the type of contamination (water-soluble materials, old paint, loose rust). Oil removal will require hot water of at least +70°C.
     
  • Degreasing with a solvent. For this purpose, a wiping material soaked in solvent or xylene is used. If surfactants are used at this stage, the metal must be rinsed with clean water after treatment.

Degreasing is a mandatory procedure before abrasive blasting metalwork. Unremoved contaminants are "hammered" into the metal by the abrasive jet. Later this causes peeling of the corrosion-resistant coating. 

3. Cleaning and roughening

Zincor should be applied to a rough surface. The minimum roughness index (Rz) is 40 μm. ISO 8503-1 or GOST 25142.

Abrasive blasting allows you to give the metal roughness. Should be performed regardless of its smoothness and meet the established standards (grade 2 of GOST 9.402, Sa 2 1/2 or Sa 2 according to ISO 8501-1). For hot-rolled steel, mechanized or manual machining is allowed (Grade 3 according to GOST 9.402, St 3 or St 2 according to ISO 8501-1).

The highest degree Sa3 is achieved by water-abrasive (water-blasting) cleaning. When using this method, a rust inhibitor must be added to the water. Subsequently, this will prevent secondary corrosion from appearing on the surface. In both waterjet and abrasive blasting, non-metallic abrasive materials are used. The moisture content of the blast abrasive should not exceed 2%.

In case the necessary equipment is not available, it is possible to sand-blast (GOST 2789-59). The required degree of roughness should be 25-35 microns and correspond to the 4-5 class of purity.

4. Dusting

Dusting is the final stage of preparation of metal surfaces for painting. It is carried out by blowing the metal with compressed air (pressure - up to 6 bar). Compressed air must not contain drops of moisture and oil (GOST 9.010, p. 2.7). In closed rooms the dedusting is carried out using an industrial vacuum cleaner.

The procedure of dedusting must be performed before applying each subsequent layer. Removal of dust particles and moisture will ensure high adhesion between coats.
 

Reinforced concrete surfaces

Preparation of surfaces of reinforced concrete is carried out in accordance with SNiP 3.04.03-85 ("Protection of building structures and facilities from corrosion").

On the prepared for painting of concrete surfaces should not be: the protruding parts of the armature, chipped ribs, oil stains, heavy dirt and dust. Permissible degree of humidity of concrete in the 20-mm surface layer - no more than 9%.

The next step is the removal of cement grout and efflorescence. Abrasive blasting is carried out on the new concrete. The same method is used to remove peeling coatings and weakly fixed fractions from the old concrete.

After the cleaning, cracks are widened and sealed. Potholes and depressions are cleaned to clean concrete. Oily, chemical and other impurities are removed by washing with a detergent. The surface is dusted with an industrial vacuum cleaner.
 

FORMULATION PREPARATION

Zincor is a completely ready-to-use composition. However, it must be mixed to obtain a homogeneous mass. A construction mixer or a drill with a suitable nozzle is suitable for this purpose. For a more fluid consistency you can dilute the paint with xylene or solvent (at a ratio of not more than 5-10% of the weight of the composition).

Important: During the painting periodically stir up Zincor to avoid zinc settling at the bottom of the can.


CONDITIONS FOR PAINT APPLICATION

It is recommended that Zincor be applied at temperatures ranging from -30°C to +60°C. The optimum temperature is considered to be +20°C. Relative humidity must not exceed 85%. Ice-covered surfaces shall not be treated!

It is allowed to paint on a wet surface, but without big drops of water. When painting metal structures externally during rain and snow it is required to build a painting tent. To avoid condensation, the temperature of the surface to be treated should be +3°C (or more) above the dew point.
 

COATING PROCESS

After preparation of the surface, Zincor should be applied for 12 hours (outdoors) or 48 hours (indoors). You can use the paint in buckets or in spray cans. Regardless of the packaging and method of application, welds and assembly joints must be treated first. For hard-to-reach places, it is more convenient to use a spray. If there are hidden cavities, they will need to be protected from moisture. The method of waterproofing and the material selected individually.

Methods of application Zincor:

  • Paintbrush. A simple and familiar method of applying paint. No solvents are usually needed for this method. The use of natural bristle brushes is recommended. In order to obtain an even layer, it is necessary to monitor their condition and cleanliness.
     
  • Roller. A convenient method for painting large flat surfaces. The working part of this tool should be made of material that is resistant to xylene or solvent (coal, or petroleum), organic solvents.
     
  • Pneumatic tool. In this technology, a stream of liquid paint is mixed with a stream of compressed air in the atomizer head. Nozzles with a diameter of 2-3 mm are used for coating. The optimum system pressure is 0.22 to 0.3 MPa, or 2 to 3 bar. For convenience of application, solvents with weight concentration up to 5% are also used.
     
  • Airless technology. It is applied at a large volume of works to reduce the painting time. Special equipment with specific parameters is used. Nozzles shall have diameter of 0.38-0.63 mm or 0.015"-0.025" and pressure in the system shall be 8-12 MPa or 80-120 bar. Dilution with solvent by weight is permitted up to 4%. For quality application of paint the nozzle should be kept perpendicular to the painted surface at a distance of 30-40 cm. The speed of movement of the atomizer should be constant.
     
  • Immersion in liquid zinc. The method is suitable for small and shaped parts. Depending on the size of the items you need to choose a suitable container and the required amount of paint. But it will be necessary to reduce the concentration of the mixture and dilute the solvent by weight to 15%. Stir the solution regularly, every 20-30 minutes.

The choice of the particular method depends on the size and area of the steelwork, on the number of layers, application conditions and other parameters. Regardless of the technology, it is necessary to provide corrosion protection coating with a thickness of 40 to 160 microns. This is enough to protect against corrosion for several years. If the deformation of steel structures during operation will be negligible, the thickness of the layer can be increased to a maximum of 200 microns.

When reapplying paint, you should wait 20-40 minutes. This is the average drying time of the first coat. Before applying a second coat, check the previous one for adhesion.

Drying time depends on the temperature:

  • -30°C - 50 minutes;
  • -10°C - 40 minutes;
  • +20°C - 20 minutes;
  • +60 ° C - 10 minutes.

If any of the conditions for surface preparation or paint application are not met, the manufacturer does not guarantee the declared characteristics and properties of the coating!
 

QUALITY CONTROL OF THE FINISHED ZINC COATING

The color of the surface of anticorrosive coating is gray matte. It should be even, homogeneous and without any extraneous inclusions. The layer thickness is measured after it has dried completely.

The quality of the coating is assessed visually with careful inspection. Dry film should not contain gaps, leaks and other visible defects. If you find them, you must first clean the area, using fine sandpaper, then degrease and dust it. Then locally apply paint so as not to create a border between the existing and new coating.


FINISH COATING

Zincor is used for its own anticorrosive coating and to restore damaged layers of metal. It also acts as a priming layer for the subsequent decorative painting.

The anticorrosive composition is compatible with 99% of finish coats: color paints and enamels on alkyd, acrylic, acrylic-urethane, polyurethane bases. 

Application of the finish coat is carried out by the same methods that are used for painting with Cinkor. You can use brushes, rollers, pneumatic tools or airless technology. Drying time of the priming coat for painting is 4-6 hours.
 

TRANSPORT OF STEELWORK AFTER TREATMENT

Before packing and transporting painted steel structures or products you need to wait 24 hours for complete drying and hardening of the coating. If the structures will be used in corrosive environments, chemical plants and other industrial plants, it is better to wait 7 days for a strong bond between the paint and the base.

Cinkor should be stored and transported in a sealed container at temperatures not exceeding +35 ° C and away from direct sunlight. After use the container should be tightly closed with a lid. Entrance of water and small particles can impair properties of zinc compound. 

Shelf life in the original container and packaging without opening is not limited!
