New generation zinc primer

Zincor is a zinc-rich primer to protect ferrous metals against corrosion in air, soil and other media. It forms a continuous barrier layer preventing the ingress of moisture and rust. It is used for cold galvanizing which allows treatment of steel structures without dismantling them. This is an important advantage over costly and complicated hot-dip galvanising (immersion in liquid zinc).

The zinc primer can be applied locally, even on welded joints. The treatment is carried out at the place of use of the steelwork. The protective effect is independent of the steel grade and holds up to 50 years! After cold galvanising it is possible to rebuild damaged areas, to restore products and to carry out colourful decorative painting.

Zincor has the highest zinc content of this class of primer - 96%. Therefore, it does not relate to zinc-containing, but to zinc-rich compositions! The protective effect is due to its highly dispersed structure and the ability of zinc to oxidise on contact with moisture and air. Auxiliary additives are necessary to maintain the density of the layer. In particular, the addition of a polymeric binder prevents cracking.
 

The need for a primer coat

Zinc coating has the ability to create double protection: active (cathodic) and passive (barrier) protection. This combined action provides an enhanced effect, prolonging the service life of the corrosion protection coating and the decorative layer.

  • Active. The electromechanical corrosion protection method is the primary method. When the primer is applied, a galvanic pair of ferrous metal and zinc is formed. The iron is the more passive element. The active zinc (anode) reacts first with moisture and air, giving off its electrons. The metal (cathode) receives them and remains untouched by rust. Iron, steels and alloys remain protected until the zinc coating has been completely stripped away. The thinning process is very slow.
     
  • Passive. This is a barrier protection which is an insulation of the metal substrate from external influences. After oxidation, a white zinc oxide is released which coats the metal. The passivation agents in the primer also create a thin surface layer against corrosion. A homogenous layer is formed which can be repaired. Even if there are rust spots, it does not penetrate deeper. The surface layer itself is restorable. It is sufficient to clean the surface and reapply the compound.

Compatibility of Zincor with other coatings

The primer coat has a matt grey colour. For industrial and building metalwork it usually acts as a stand-alone coating. But for landscaping and interiors it is also required as a decorative coating. Dyes must not be added to zinc primer as this weakens the protective properties. For this reason, special compounds are used for the final coating. The zinc primer has high adhesion and adheres well to the surface.

  • Paints with aluminium. The presence of aluminium powder in the composition gives the coating a brilliant silver colour. These constructions look presentable.
  • Anticorrosive paints. They are alkyd or acrylic formulations, available in a variety of colours. You can choose basic colours or an extended palette.
     

How do I apply a rust primer?

In cold galvanising, the quality and durability of the coating depends directly on following the technology. All processes, especially the preparation of the substrate, must be strictly adhered to.
 

Preparation and cleaning of metal surfaces

  1. Surfaces must be cleaned from contamination (dirt, moisture, rust, grease, scale etc.). The cleaning can be done mechanically, chemically (with fresh water, solvents, chemicals) or thermally (flames or annealing). If the surface of the metal is fairly clean, without any residues of old coatings or rust, cleaning by hand with household detergents is sufficient.
     
  2. The next stage in the preparation of the metal surfaces is degreasing in accordance with GOST 9.402-2004 (clause 6.4.1) to grade 1. It is important to pay special attention to metal areas in the areas of assembly joints and welds. Degrease the surface by wiping with a cloth soaked in solvent or xylene until all grease has been removed. This step is always carried out before abrasive blasting so that contaminants not removed are not forced into the metal surface by the abrasive jet and subsequently cause delamination of the coating from the metal surface.
     
  3. We recommend abrasive blasting with roughening, irrespective of the degree of contamination and flatness of the surface of the metal structure. Degree 2 cleaning according to GOST 9.402 (Sa 2 1/2 or Sa 2 according to ISO 8501-1), minimum surface roughness index (Rz) 40 μm, ISO 8503-1 or GOST 25142. For hot-rolled steel, machine and manual cleaning to degree 3 according to GOST 9.402 (St 3 or St 2 according to ISO 8501-1) is allowed. If no abrasive blasting equipment is available, the surface of the seam can be sandblasted in accordance with GOST 2789-59. When water-jet blasting is used, a corrosion inhibitor must be added to the water to prevent secondary corrosion from forming on the surface of the metal. The humidity of the abrasive used for blasting must not exceed 2%.
     
  4. At the end of the preparation process the surface must be blast-dusted. The dedusting is carried out with compressed air at a pressure of up to 6 bar, free of foreign particles and moisture. In enclosed areas, dusting should be carried out with an industrial hoover. To ensure maximum adhesion between coats, dedusting should be carried out before each coat is applied.
     

Preparation and cleaning of reinforced concrete surfaces

  1. Preparation of reinforced concrete surfaces for painting is carried out in accordance with SNiP 3.04.03-85 "Protection of building structures and facilities against corrosion". Surfaces must be free of protruding reinforcement, sinks of overlapping, chipped ribs, oil stains, dirt and dust. The humidity of the concrete in the surface layer of 20 mm shall not exceed 9%.
     
  2. On new concrete, remove grout and efflorescence by abrasive blasting. Remove loose coatings, loosely fixed fractions and efflorescence on old concrete by abrasive blasting. Then repair the cracks and seal them. Clean potholes and hollows into clean concrete. Remove oil, grease, chemical and other impurities by washing with a suitable detergent. Dust must be thoroughly removed with an industrial hoover.
     

Preparation and application of the formulation​

Leave Zincor Primer in a warm room for a few hours before application. Stir thoroughly before application to obtain a homogeneous mass. Apply by any available means (brush, roller, sponge, dipping). Stir the product periodically during use to prevent zinc settling. Read the detailed instructions before applying the product.
 

Precautions

Personal protective equipment (mask, gloves, suit) must be worn when handling with anticorrosive agents. Ventilation must be ensured during processing in the room. Apply exterior applications away from sources of fire.
